Age to qualify for Medicare

When can I join, switch, or drop a plan?

There are 3 opportunities to do this during IEP, AEP,
or MEDICARE Advantage OEP.

Initial Enrollment Period is during the 7-month period:

  • Starts 3 months before the month you turn 65
  • Includes the month you turn 65
  • Ends 3 months after the month you turn 65

Annual Enrollment Period.
From October 15 – December 7. Your coverage will begin on January 1.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period.
From January 1 – March 31.

I am newly eligible for Medicare because I have a disability (under 65) When?

During the 7-month period that:

  • Starts 3 months before your 25th month of getting Social Security or RRB disability benefits
  • Includes your 25th month of getting disability benefits
  • Ends 3 months after your 25th month of getting disability benefits

Signing up for Medicare at the right time allows you to avoid paying lifetime penalties.

Various Medicare Parts

(Medicare and It's Parts: A, B, C & D)

Part A & Part B is also known as original medicare. Part A is in-patient hospital coverage and Part B is outpatient medical coverage.

Part C is the Medicare Advantage Plans. They are run by medicare approved private insurance companies. Part C helps to manage your healthcare. These plans include all the benefits and services of Part A & Part B. Some plans have extra benefits like wellness programs, routine hearing, vision and dental coverage.

Part D is prescription drug coverage
